About Mentorship

University Mentorship, a part of the Office of New Student Programs, helps first year students get acclimated to campus life. Mentorship is open to all first-year students. The Mentorship Program is one of the many Michigan Learning Communities available to students on campus. These programs help to make the University a smaller place, and Mentorship helps build relationships between students and Michigan faculty and staff.

The mission of the University Mentorship Program is to provide an opportunity for new students to connect with Mentors who are knowledgeable about the University of Michigan. Each Mentorship group has a three-tiered structure: one F/S mentor, one Peer mentor, and four first-year students (Mentees) who are grouped according to their academic and extra-curricular interests. Throughout the fall semester Mentorship groups participate in a variety of activities, both academic and social, that work towards supporting and encouraging each first-year student.

WHY CONSIDER MENTORSHIP?

Going away to college can be an exciting time, yet many students also are apprehensive about the various challenges that await them upon entrance to college. Being active in Mentorship exposes you to many great opportunities that first-year students don’t notice until their sophomore or junior year. Mentorship is also a great program that starts you on the path of networking with students, faculty and staff who can help you make the most of your undergraduate career.

Mentorship connects you with upper-class students who remember what it means to be a new student on campus. These Wolverines represent a multitude of majors, student organizations and backgrounds. Michigan faculty and staff also generously donate their time and expertise to help you get acclimated.

Mentorship groups share not only personal experiences, but also exciting events such as: theme dinners, musical and theatrical performances, sporting events, academic and social workshops and even a trip to Cedar Point amusement park!

Together Peer and Faculty/Staff Mentors help you find your niche at the University of Michigan.
